Ontario Basketball Assocation (O.B.A) Regional Training Centre (R.T.C) RTC background: In 2004-05, when Basketball Ontario piloted the Regional Training Centre (RTC) project it was offered to girls and women in three northern communities - Deep River, Iroquois Falls and Sudbury. During this pilot, a total of 225 female athletes were reached through tryouts and six new female coaches were recruited to volunteer as Head and Assistant Coaches. Ninety-five percent of these athletes and coaches became new members of Basketball Ontario and a large percentage sought out a Member Club to join. In 2005-06 Basketball Ontario relaunched the RTC program to include two Men’s Regional Training Centres, one in Sault Ste.Marie and the other in the inner city regions of Toronto. Approximatley 300 athletes attended RTC tryouts and eight new coaches were recruited to volunteer as Assistant coaches. 113 athletes became new Basketball Ontario members and three new club team organizations were established in the Northern regions of Ontario. For 2006-2007 Basketball Ontario expanded from four to eight operational RTC’s and reached approximately 510 athletes (surpassing the original objective of 425 athletes) through its free basketball skill sessions (tryouts). Membership numbers increased by 192 athletes and 32 new coaches were recruited into the RTC program (4 head coaches and 28 assistant coaches). Three new club team organizations from the North region were also established. Since its conception in 2004, the Regional Training Centre program has reached over 1,000 athletes in the Northern region, further strengthening the Basketball Ontario brand and increasing program awareness through out the region. Through this reach Basketball Ontario has been able to ID athletes for future participation in the Elite regional teams (BDP, MDP, JDP), the Provincial teams (Under 15 & Under 17), and the Nike Centre for Performance. 520 athletes have become Basketball Ontario members through the RTC program and 46 new coaches have been recruited into Basketball Ontario’s programming through the RTC program. In the past three years since the establishment of the RTC program, there has been six new club team organizations established in the North Region. The three clubs that were established in 2006-2007 have set up house league programs with the intention of further developing their athletes to compete in the Ontario Cup in 2008. The three clubs which formed in 2005-2006 competed in this year’s Basketball Ontario provincial championships. The Regional Training Centres (RTC) are patterned after the Centre for Performance Program (CP) and strive to provide athletes an opportunity to enhance their basketball skill level in preparation for Regional Teams (BDP/MDP/JDP), Provincial Teams (Under 15 & Under 17), and the Nike Centres for Performance (CP) – Ontario. In addition to this, they promote individual skill development, team concepts development, strength and agility education development, time management, and planning and personal development skills. The RTC program will target athletes aged 11 to 17 who upon selection will attend four to six sessions over a sixteen week period RTC Mandate:
