Academic Intervention and Post Secondary Bridging Program

Main Activities Description Desired Outcome

1. intensive academic intervention for struggling students, in particular the disproportionately high number of marginalized, inner city students (black students) who fall below the provincial standards/ curriculum in literacy and in numeracy consequently under achieving in their primary years secondary years and become disengaged from high school in their secondary years

2. access to psychological services for students who are struggling, might be on the school board’s waiting list or who might have one or more learning exceptionalities

1. Saturday morning tutoring sessions (10.00 am to 2.00 p.m) at C.W Jeffreys

2. Weekday tutoring sessions at Seneca@York (Mon-Fri)

3. Weekday tutoring sessions at Brookview and C.W. Jefferys CI,
(Tue & Thu)

4. intensive, in-class support for students with exceptionalities (Learning Disability, Mild Intellectual Deficit, Behavioral, etc.) and struggling students inside the classrooms

5. formalized and non- formalized assessment for low achieving students with potential learning exceptionalities (Learning Disability, Mild Intellectual Deficit, Behavioral etc)

1. with the huge discrepancies between the provincial standards and the schools in the local community, it is obvious that an aggressive intervention is necessary in the context of academics

2. to move marginalized students of all ages and at risk students closer to the Provincial academic Standards, thus enhancing their capacities in Numeracy and Literacy

3. to provide marginalized/inner-city students access to post secondary institutions while they are in Elementary, Middle School and High School. High school students will also have access to post secondary institutions, mentorship, college/university course work, psychological services and access to post secondary experience while they are still in high school, thus eroding the perception amongst inner-city students that post secondary institutions are inaccessible

Evaluation Model Time Line (32 weeks)

All the students participating in the Y.A.A.A.C.E initiative must maintain an average of B or better. As per agreement with students and parents upon registration, all the students must produce report cards as issued per term. A parent(s) and participants interview will be arranged immediately for non-compliance. Upon reviewing the report cards, struggling students will be provided with intensive academic support.

Because of the network of teachers and administrators involved in this initiative, Y.A.A.A.C.E will provide its own in-house language and numeracy assessment for math and language when required
